The Animals evolved from the Alan Price Set after Eric Burdon joined the group in 1962. Achieving success with House of the Rising Sun, many hit songs followed, but by the end of 1966, most original group members had left to pursue other careers. Bassist Charles Chandler brought Jimi Hendrix to England and paired him with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell to form the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Eric Burdon continued with Eric Burdon and the New Animals, Eric Burdon and War, and ultimately a solo career.

Initially a jazz musician, British keyboardists Brian Auger developed a jazz-rock fusion style of music using a Hammond organ, bass guitar, and drums. Forming the Brian Auger Trinity in 1964, he soon teamed with vocalists Long John Baldry, Rod Stewart, and Julie Driscoll to form the group Steampacket. Auger eventually reorganized the Trinity in 1966 with bassist Dave Ambrose, drummer Clive Thacker, guitarist Gary Boyle, and vocalist Julie Driscoll. The Trinity broke up in 1970 but reemerged the same year as the Oblivion Express. Auger continued to record in later years with Julie Driscoll and with Eric Burdon.

Strawberry Field was a large Victorian building only a five-minute walk from John Lennon's home on Menlove Avenue (John added the 's' to the song title). The building was a children's home, and the surrounding woods became a place where John could be alone with his thoughts and imagination. While in Spain working on the film How I Won the War, John began writing 'Strawberry Fields' in the autumn of 1966. His romantic assocoations with Strawberry Field developed into the lyrics for the song. The Strawberry Field building has since been torn down.
